Get in the zone

When it comes to exercise, one of the best places to be is in the zone. This is a where the body and mind are one; they are responding perfectly to your mental cues and energy feels limitless, your mind is clear and you are in the moment where nothing else matters.

Ideally, everyone would be in the zone for every workout, but that’s not reality. For most it’s intermittent, while for others it’s more consistent.

Here are some things that will influence you ‘zone’ time:

1. Emotions

Everyone has a bad day from time to time. We wake up on the wrong side of the bed, or we can be in a great mood and someone says (or does) something to upset us.
Unfortunately, these things happen to the best of us and are perfectly normal. However, being in the zone requires having a clear mind, and leaving stress and negativity at the door.

Action step: Train your brain to let go of things you can’t control and replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Read inspirational quotes and surround yourself with positive, goal oriented people to help keep you in the right frame of mind.

2. The Power of Visualization

Can you imagine what being in the zone looks like? What it feels like? What you are doing while you’re there? The more clearly and detailed you can imagine the zone, the closer you will get to experiencing it.

Action step: Close your eyes, imagine the above scenario, and how you expect to perform while in the zone. Rehearse this in your mind before a workout and even before bed. The more a person can visualize something clearly in their mind, the greater the probability that it will come true.

3. Practice and Patience

One of the most important qualities a person can have is self-discipline. It is critical that a person be willing to get out of their comfort zone and put in the hours it requires to master their chosen pursuits. In order to excel, they must be willing to push themselves when no one is watching and when they don’t want to. Not everyone can reach the zone, and it won’t happen overnight. Hard work, discipline and patience are key.

Action step: Repetition is a must. Instead of getting frustrated that things aren’t happening as fast or as easily as anticipated, focus on mastering the fundamentals and mechanics of the sport. Pay attention to how your body responds to the activity. As your level of conditioning increases, you will flow into the zone naturally.

4. Believe

Do you think you can reach the zone? Do you believe the mind and body can become one? A person will never reach the zone if they do not believe they can. All the hard work and sacrifice will be for naught if they don’t have faith in their own abilities.

Action step: Whether you’ve experienced the zone once or never at all, tell yourself that you WILL achieve it in the near future. You will enjoy the feeling because hard work always pays off. You won’t stop until you are in the zone.

  • Watch workout videos of people who inspire you, you look up to, or have mastered the skill set you’re trying to achieve
  • Create an ‘in the zone’ playlist that will motivate you and get you excited to work hard towards your goals
  • Dial in your pre-session snacks - try using a supplement such as RP MAXPSIOxyWheyOxyshred to get you energized and ready to smash out a killer session.

Reaching the zone isn’t easy, but with hard work, dedication and the right mindset it is possible.
